Using Your Silver Surfer

A: 7th Floor has made a handy PDF guide for full operation, but its as simple as loading the wand, applying it to the pre-heated SSV, and drawing!

Check the ‘User Guide’ tab on the left for full instructions.

A: The SSV can handle nearly any level of grind you have. Medium grind is best, but all varieties will work.

Note that chunkier pieces may need to be broken up when stirring to create more surface area, thus creating a denser vapor.

Fine grind will also work, but can clog up the screen if it is too fine; it will also require lower temperature settings due to the lower airflow that is a direct result of the more densely loaded particles. If the particles are finer than the holes in the screen, then they are definitely too small.

A: Regardless of the temperature you set, the SSV should be ready within two minutes, often sooner.
A: The SSV offers a wide range of temperatures, from gentle heat upwards to +500°F. The element itself can reach 800°F. The SSV can handle a very wide range of blends.
A: Essentially, yes. However this is easily done with a simple tip in the question below about setting your knob up properly.
A: 7th floor realized that everyone draws at a different rate, and created a vape that can deliver a huge range of temperatures. There is a simple way to set the SSV for your perfect temperature, based on your personal draw rate.

  • Turn the unit on and turn the knob 1/3 of its possible rotation, and allow to preheat for 90 seconds. The key is to start low and go up incrementally.
  • Load your blends into the wand, and insert it into the heater cover.
  • Draw at a comfortable rate, and check for any visible vapors being created.
  • If you see vapors at this point, you have lucked into the correct setting for your draw rate.
  • If you don’t see any vapors, turn the knob SLIGHTLY, wait 30 seconds and try to draw again. Repeat this process until you have vapors forming.
  • SPECIAL NOTE: Once you have your perfect setting, check your temperature adjustment knob, and if it isn’t pointing up(12 o’clock), remove it by pulling it gently off its base, using care not to adjust the setting as you pull it off. Once removed, replace with the indicator pointing up, and again using caution to not adjust the setting as you reapply the knob to its post. Now when you turn your SSV on, you can know EXACTLY where to set knob.
A: This is personal preference. Some owners leave there SSV on every waking hour, and others only turn it on when they need to use it. 7th Floor says they have a unit that has been continuously plugged in and running perfectly for over 8 years, with the exception of when they moved to new warehouses.

There is no auto-shutoff or standby for the SSV, As a general safety rule, do not leave the SSV unattended while powered on.

A: Yes. Each blend is different, and since Since the ceramic heater is capable of higher than normal temperatures for a vaporizer, it’s vital that you always start with low temperatures and work your way up. Starting low is the key to finding vapor perfection with the SSV.
A: The SSV has a range from roughly 150°F to ~650&deg:F
A: The SSV was designed originally for aromatic blends, but it is entirely possible to use solid and liquid concentrates. With a myriad of options, its probably best if you Google the proper technique.
A: Vape World only carries 110v units.  For 220V, Please Contact 7th Floor directly.  
A: Don’t fill the SSV wand too tightly, or the airflow will be restricted, allowing your blends to potentially over-heat. Use a medium grind and fill moderately. Many owners fill their wand by drawing through the mouthpiece, creating a vacuum at the wand tip which they use to vacuum up their blends.

The SSV’s temperature is controlled by two things: the temperature setting of course, but also the rate at which a user draws from the whip. The SSV is capable of a lot of heat, and also a lot of air flow.

So – at any given set temperature – drawing slower will create higher temps, while drawing faster will allow for ‘cooler’ temps (relative to drawing slowly). This is a direct result of how long air is allowed to be near the ceramic heater. The slower you draw, the longer it has to heat up, and the faster you draw, the less time it spends getting hot.

A: All ground glass accessories that work with the Silver Surfer will also work with your Da Buddha Vaporizer, the sibling vaporizer also from 7th Floor.
A: Yes. SSV’s are made in Colorado from foreign and domestic parts. The glass is blown there, the powdercoating and final assembly as well.
A: Functionally they are exactly the same. They have the exact same internals, and ceramic heater. They use the same silicone tubing.

The main difference lies in the customization of the vaporizer. The DBV is only available in black or silver, has a plastic knob, a plastic baseplate, and is partially assembled in China. The SSV has 10 color options, has a custom glass knob, heater cover and wand, and powdercoated aluminum baseplate. The SSV is set at an angle to prevent your blends from falling into the heater.

A: The SSV is made from the highest quality materials:

A: The SSV’s heating element is ceramic.
A: Start with small amounts, and vary until you find your perfect amount.
A: The SSV  currently has three different kinds of wand and heater cover combinations: Standard, Ground Glass, and Spherical Ground Glass.  They each offer their own advantages, take a look and see which could be right for you:

  • Standard 
    • Standard Wands are smooth with a flared end, they accept 15.8mm screens.
    • Standard Heater Covers have a smooth rounded tip with a small draw hole.
  • Ground Glass 
    • Ground Glass Wands have a 19mm male ground glass end, they accept 14.8mm screens.
    • Ground Glass Heater Covers have a 19mm female ground glass end.
    • Ground Glass wand/heater cover combinations do not need a hands-free adapter, they lock into place with a slight twisting motion.
  • Spherical Ground Glass
    • Spherical Ground Glass Wands(SGG) have a large, rounded ground glass end, they accept 15.8mm screens.
    • SGG Heater Covers have a large ground glass cup to provide a tight seal with the wand while also providing directional control over the airflow.
    • The SGG style needs a Hands Free Attachment in order to be hands free.
    • The SGG has te largest blend chamber of the three Styles
    • Much like the Standard Glass style, with the ball and socket setup, you can ‘steer’ the heated air to make sure you are vaporizing 100% of your blend.
A:The SSV has three possible glass styles, requiring two different possible screen sizes:

  • Standard Wands accept 15.8mm screens
  • Ground Glass Wands accept 14.8mm screens
  • Spherical Ground Glass Wands accept 15.8mm screens

A: That is actually part of the wand, it’s called “fritt”, a crushed glass that’s melted into the wand and adds an aesthetic touch.
A: It is definitely not recommended, but in an absolute emergency, you could Macgyver something. See the ‘Glass Styles’ tab to the left for more information about the three different styles.

Cleaning & Maintenance

A: Always unplug the vaporizer from the electrical outlet and allow to cool COMPLETELY before cleaning, 30 minutes should be sufficient.

Always make sure your vaporizer is COMPLETELY dry before plugging it back in.

Do not attempt any internal or external repairs to your unit as doing so may cause fatal injury – or worse – void your warranty! (Please contact us if you feel something is wrong with your vaporizer.)

The SSV is an extremely durable vaporizer that will require minimal cleaning and maintenance.

The exterior can be kept clean with a warm damp cloth. If any of the glass parts require cleaning, place in a small isopropyl alcohol bath until residue has dissolved. Small brushes might aid this removal. The hose can be cleaned by filling with warm soapy water, closing both ends and agitating until clean. Rinse all parts thoroughly with warm water and allow to dry completely before use.

A: Over time your glass, especially your wand, will become dirty.  Soaking in isopropyl alcohol or running glass parts through a dishwasher would be acceptable methods of cleaning.  
A: Inspect your vaporizer periodically. Look inside the heater cover, check your screen, wand and hose for any buildup that could be effecting performance. It will tell you when it needs cleaning.
A: Isopropyl alcohol is an excellent cleaner for your glass parts, but we don’t recommend using it on the finish; instead use a warm damp cloth on the exterior.
A: Soaking the hose in warm soapy water, then flexing and manipulating the hose to disturb all of the stuck on pieces should return your hose to a near new state. 
A: Warm soapy water is best, followed by a warm water cloth to remove any soap residue.  USE CAUTION – UNPLUG YOUR SSV! And never bring liquids near the SSV when cleaning, just a moist cloth, microfiber towel or cotton swab.  If you have a glossy powdercoating, use only clean microfiber, as to not scratch the gloss. If using cleansers, always test an inconspicuous area below the SSV 
A: The glass and the hose will collect the majority of the build-up
A: The SSV is very user serviceable, we have replacement parts if you need them.

The SSV is one of the most customizable vaporizers on the market. From the baseplate to the custom knob, you can dial in exactly what you are looking for. Please contact us if you have any customization questions.  

A: This is an unfortunate situation, but one that is easily remedied. Follow these steps:

  • Turn the unit off and unplug immediately.
  • If over-heating occurred, remove unit to the outdoors or an area with good ventilation
  • Allow to cool
  • Remove heater cover, being extremely careful to lookout for the metal shims that could be in use at the base of the heater cover.** Best practice is to remove heater cover while the SSV is upside down, so if any shims fall out, you can track them down. If you forgot to unplug the SSV and let it cool down in steps 1 & 3, you will be rudely reminded of this fact in step 4.
  • Remove all debris from around heating element.
  • Use a air blower or can of compressed air to remove any remaining debris. Cleaning the area around the heating element.
  • When clean and without the heater cover in place, plug the SSV in, and turn on high, allowing any remaining particles to cook off. USE CAUTION! The heating element is hot enough to really, really ruin your day if you accidentally touch it.
  • Once everything has cooked away, unplug the SSV and allow to cool. ONCE COOL, return the shims(if required) and then the heater cover. Plug the unit back in, turn on and ensure all is working normally.

** 7th Floor upgraded to a new heater cover mount in 2012, all vapes purchased since then do not use shims, rather they have a spring clip that is mounted to the base and does not require removal when cleaning the heater cover.

A: 7th Floor offers a standard 3 year warranty on all of its vaporizers, and 30 days on all glass parts.  This is upgradeable to 10 year, or lifetime, for an extra fee, contact 7th Floor for more information on extending your warranty.

A: Glass is not covered under the three year warranty, however if you SSV arrived with broken glass, that is warrantied but only for the first 30 days of ownership.

Getting the Most Out of Your Silver Surfer

  • Regardless of the current dial setting, The rate at which you draw will dictate the temp of the air flowing over your blends.
    • The faster you draw, the less the time the air has to heat up around the ceramic element, therefore drawing faster will cause cooler air temps.
    • On the flip side, drawing slowly could allow for air temps that are too high, causing overheating of your blend. A great rule of thumb is to start with low temps…find your personal and comfortable rate of draw, and slowly and incrementally increase the temperature until you have vapors.
  • Stir between EACH draw. This will help break up your blend and expose more of it to the warm air.
  • The indicator on the custom glass knob isn’t necessarily set to anything, but there is a way to make sure that setting it to 12 O’clock or North will be perfect every time. Once you have mastered the first bullet above to find the perfect temperature setting for your rate of draw:
    • Remove the knob by pulling on it gently outward, until it releases from its post.
    • Ensure that you do not change the setting as you remove the knob.
    • Once removed, and with the dial still at your perfect setting, replace the knob with the indicator pointed upward to 12 Noon. That way, you always know exactly where to set it to when you turn it on.
  • When you have friends over that have never used the SSV before, be sure to explain the process clearly to them, and let them watch you once. Its possible to blow your blends back on the heater, so careful explanation and demonstration will save you a huge headache.
  • When you first turn on your SSV, turn it all the way on for one minute, then to your personal setting. It should be ready after 90 seconds.
  • If you aren’t getting exactly the vapor quality you are after, look at adjusting any and/or all of the following variables until you find your sweet spot.
    • Grind Consistency – are the ground-up particles all roughly the same size?
    • Grind level – the SSV prefers a medium grind, but experiment with finer or coarser grinds to see if it achieves the result you are after.
    • Amount Used – Some vaporizers thrive when loaded fully. Others, not so much.
    • Draw Rate – Convection vaporizers with good airflow can have their temperatures altered by the speed at which you draw a breath. As the air passes over the heating element, obviously it heats up. If you draw fast, causing the air to move quickly over the heating element, it only has “X” amount of time to heat up. However if you draw slowly, the air has much more time to heat up, and therefore will deliver a much warmer air to your blends. Drawing fast = cooler temps; drawing slow = warmer temps.


The SSV is thoughtfully designed, part of which is being able to be cleaned easily.

  • The heater cover and Wand take most of the buildup, so when they get dirty, simply put in the dishwasher, or soak in isopropyl alcohol until all of the buildup has dissolved.
  • The hose can be rinsed with warm soapy water. Manipulate the hose as you go, dislodging any debris that is still adhered to the inside, paying particular attention to the end that fits in the wand.
  • The SSV itself can be cleaned with a damp(not moist or wet!) cloth, and stubborn stains can be removed with a mild detergent, being careful to test an inconspicuous spot underneath the vaporizer beforehand.
  • Want to clean just the screen? It may become clogged with buildup before the entire wand needs cleaning. To clean just the screen, use one of two methods:
    • The quickest way to clean the screen is to turn the SSV to its highest setting. Insert the empty wand into the heater, and draw, drying out the remaining buildup. Blow through the mouthpiece forcefully to eliminate any remaining dried-up residue. Use caution not to blow the screen out.
    • A more thorough method is a modified version of a full wand cleaning. Place a shot glass inside another much taller cup. Fill the shot glass with isopropyl alcohol, then insert the wand into the shot glass, ground glass/screen side down, so that only the end of the wand and the screen are submerged in alcohol. You could forgo the shot glass and fill the bottom of taller cup, but it requires more alcohol than is really necessary for cleaning. Let soak for 30 minutes, remove the wand and allow to dry. Blow once through it to clear any remaining debris.

Try these Solutions to common issues:

A: You either a) the temperature too high, or B) are drawing too slowly. Adjust the temperature knob until you are no longer overheating your blends.
A: Make sure the unit is on, and the temperature is set high enough to vaporize the particular blend you are using. Check the light near the power cord, it gets brighter the more you turn the knob. If you are still not getting vapors, continue until the knob is at its maximum. If you are still not getting vapors, check to see that you are getting a good seal between your heater cover and wand. Check also for cracks or cuts in your hose, any area that air could be leaking in.

A: Shipping costs for repairs must be prepaid before sending in your unit. You must call or email customer service at 866-835-6418 or Once payment is made for shipping, we will email you a return shipping label that is required for sending a unit in for repair. Packages that do not have one of these shipping labels will be refused.

When sending your SSV unit in for repair you will need to do the following:

-Remove the glass heater cover and knob. (This is done by gently twisting and pulling straight up)

-Clean the unit of all residue (if it is not cleaned there will be an additional $10 charge)

-Include: a note explaining the issue you are experiencing, your return name and address, and email address for confirmation of receipt.

Do not send any glass accessories with the unit, these will not be returned to you and you will be responsible for replacing them.

7th Floor provides a FREE 3 year warranty on all electrical parts, and a 30 day warranty for all glass on the SSV unit*. To make a claim on the glass you must take a picture of the damaged piece and send it to: If anything happens within the warranty period, you can send it in to 7th Floor and they will resolve the issue**.

In addition to our standard 3 year warranty, They now offer a 10 YEAR and LIFETIME warranty option for the SSV. These can be purchased when first ordering your vaporizer (extra benefits included). If you already own an SSV, you can still purchase the extended warranty. This warranty does not cover normal wear and tear. It also does not cover malicious intent such as: driving a car over the unit or dropping the SSV from any significant height.

**7th Floor inspects all custom glass before shipping it to our customers, we understand that things can get broken in shipment, as long as we are contacted immediately after the damaged product is received we will solve any issues that arise to the best of our ability.
